How Dry Ice Blasting Works
Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to propel small pellets of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) at high velocity. When these pellets strike a surface, three things happen simultaneously:
Thermal Shock: The extreme cold (-109°F) causes contaminants to contract and crack, breaking their bond with the underlying surface.
Kinetic Energy: The pellets strike with enough force to dislodge loosened contaminants from the surface.
Sublimation: Upon impact, the dry ice pellets convert directly from solid to gas (sublimate), lifting contaminants away from the surface.
The result: clean surfaces with no secondary waste. The dry ice disappears as CO2 gas, leaving only the removed contaminant for disposal.
Advantages Over Traditional Methods
Non-Abrasive: Unlike sandblasting or bead blasting, dry ice is soft enough that it won't damage most surfaces. Delicate machinery, electrical components, and precision surfaces can be cleaned without wear.
Non-Conductive: Dry ice blasting is safe for use around electrical equipment. There's no water to cause shorts and no conductive media to create hazards.
Chemical-Free: No solvents, detergents, or cleaning agents are used. This eliminates chemical exposure risks for workers and removes hazardous waste disposal requirements.
No Secondary Waste: The dry ice sublimates completely. You're left only with the removed contaminant—not contaminated water, spent media, or chemical residue.
Faster Downtime: Equipment can often be cleaned in place without disassembly. No drying time is required. Production resumes immediately after cleaning.
Environmentally Responsible: The CO2 used in dry ice is typically recycled from other industrial processes. No new CO2 is created—it's simply repurposed before release.
