Where pressure washing still wins
Pressure washing is still the right call for exterior body wash, salt-rinse after winter routes, and undercarriage flush on trucks that just need surface mud removed — assuming you have a compliant wash pad and oily-water management.
Where dry ice blasting wins decisively

Hydraulic equipment. Excavators, loaders, telehandlers — dry ice removes baked-on grease around cylinders and pivot points without forcing water into seals.
Ag sprayers and combines off-season. Pre-season cleaning gets done in a heated shop, in February, without water. Combine cleaning cycles that used to take a full day now take half a shift.

The downtime math fleet managers actually care about
Pressure washing a Class 8 engine bay properly takes ~60 minutes plus 2–4 hours of drying before the unit can go back into service. Dry ice cleaning the same bay takes ~45 minutes and the unit returns to service immediately because there's no water to dry. Across a 40-unit fleet doing one deep clean per quarter, that's roughly 480 hours of avoided downtime per year.
That number is usually what closes the conversation for fleet directors. The chemistry is interesting; the downtime is the line item.
When we recommend a hybrid program
The honest answer for most fleets in our region: dry ice for the engine bay, hydraulics, and electrical; pressure wash for the body, undercarriage, and wheels. Run them as separate workflows. The dry ice work can be scheduled quarterly per unit; the pressure wash runs on its normal weekly or post-route cadence.

Will dry ice blasting damage paint, gaskets, or seals?

How long does it take to clean a Class 8 engine bay?

Does dry ice blasting create hazardous waste?
No. The CO2 sublimates to gas, leaving only the contaminant you removed (grease, soot, paint chips) as a dry residue you sweep up. There's no oily wash-water to capture, treat, or dispose of — which is a major reason fleet and industrial clients in EPA-regulated wash-pad jurisdictions move to dry ice.
