Who Makes the Best Sealcoat? A Buyer's Guide to AMT-5000 and the National Brands

    Summit Surface Partners9 min read

If you're a paving contractor in Montana, Idaho, Eastern Washington, North Dakota, or South Dakota, you have a real choice in 2026 about whose sealer goes in your tank. Three national manufacturers — SealMaster, GemSeal, and Neyra — own most of the published category. One regional formulation, Pitch Black AMT-5000, is built and stocked inside the territory by Summit Surface Partners.

This is the buyer's-side framework we'd use to decide.

The four questions that actually decide it

Question 1: What's your delivered cost per gallon, not your sticker cost?

Bulk sealer pricing changes weekly in 2026. Posted prices are a trap. The number that matters is delivered to your yard, in your bulk quantity, on your timeline. Freight from out-of-region plants adds noticeable cost on small-and-mid bulk runs — and it adds schedule risk that's hard to price in until a job slips.

Get a delivered quote from your nearest national franchise plant and a delivered quote from Summit Surface Partners on the same bulk quantity. Then decide.

Question 2: What's the cold-climate cure window where you work?

Our territory has short application windows. Spring jobs start when overnight lows are still in the 30s. Fall closeouts have to lock before the first frost. AMT-5000 was formulated and field-tested specifically for that. The national brands carry excellent broad-climate products, but they aren't optimized for the Northern Rockies specifically.

If you're working in Phoenix, this doesn't matter. If you're working in Kalispell, Bozeman, Coeur d'Alene, or Rapid City, it does.

Question 3: What chemistry are you allowed to apply?

Coal-tar emulsion sealer is being restricted across the Northwest. Washington has restrictions on the books; other jurisdictions are watching. If your book of work crosses jurisdictions, running a single asphalt-emulsion product across all of them is simpler than tracking which job allows what chemistry.

Pitch Black AMT-5000 is asphalt emulsion only — by design. SealMaster, GemSeal, and Neyra all carry both chemistries; you have to choose, and you have to be sure your crews don't grab the wrong drum.

Question 4: When something goes sideways, who answers the phone?

Sealer is a chemistry product. Sometimes a batch doesn't behave the way the data sheet says it will — temperature is wrong, the substrate is wrong, the contractor stretched the coverage rate, or the manufacturer had a bad day at the plant. When it happens, you want the formulation team on the phone, not a regional rep two states away.

Pitch Black's tech support is direct to the team that mixes the product. Call (406) 309-SEAL and you get someone who can tell you whether the issue is field-side or chemistry-side, and how to fix it.

    Direct comparisons

We've published three head-to-head pages with attribute-by-attribute breakdowns:

    - Pitch Black AMT-5000 vs SealMaster — regional supply, cold-climate cure, and the SealMaster franchise math.

    - Pitch Black AMT-5000 vs GemSeal — coal-tar vs asphalt-emulsion chemistry and the regulatory-risk angle.

    - Pitch Black AMT-5000 vs Neyra — published spec depth vs in-region manufacturing.

Each one is honest about where the competitor is the better call. We sell sealer for a living; we also believe contractors are smart enough to make the right pick when the data is on the table.

What the buyer's framework usually decides

For contractors whose yard is inside the Summit Surface Partners delivery footprint and whose book of work is concentrated in MT/ID/WA/ND/SD, Pitch Black AMT-5000 typically wins on delivered cost, lead time, cold-climate performance, and technical access. That covers most regional paving and sealcoating outfits in the territory.

For contractors with crews trained on a specific national brand's polymer-modified product, equipment configured for that brand, and a franchise plant inside their delivery radius, staying with the incumbent is usually the right call.

For multi-state contractors running jobs both inside and outside our footprint, the answer is often both — Pitch Black on the in-region jobs, the national brand on the out-of-region ones.

    Get a delivered quote

We don't post bulk prices online — they change too fast, and we'd rather quote your territory, your minimum, and your delivery window directly. Email the wholesale desk at info@summit-surface.com or call (406) 309-SEAL. Tell us your bulk quantity and your delivery zip — we'll come back with delivered cost, lead time, and the SDS.

If you want a sample for jobsite testing before placing a bulk order, we ship sample quantities to qualified contractors. Just ask.
