Everyone asks for a number. The trouble is that asphalt thickness is not an input — it is the output of three other things: the loads the surface will carry, the strength of the soil underneath, and how much aggregate base sits between them.
Change any one of those and the right thickness changes with it. A 3-inch mat on a well-drained, properly compacted base over firm subgrade will outlast a 4-inch mat placed on wet, uncompacted fill. Every time.
The Three Inputs That Set Thickness
1. Loads. Not average traffic — the heaviest repeated loads. Passenger cars are almost irrelevant to pavement design. Garbage trucks, delivery semis, fire apparatus, concrete trucks and dumpster-service vehicles do essentially all of the structural damage. One loaded truck axle can be equivalent to thousands of car passes.
2. Subgrade. The native soil's strength and, critically, its drainage. Free-draining granular soils support a thinner section. Silts and clays that hold water lose strength when saturated and need more base, drainage improvements, geotextile separation, or stabilization.
3. Base depth. Compacted crushed aggregate spreads the load before it reaches the soil. Base is generally the cheaper structural material, which is why adding base is frequently a better investment than adding an inch of asphalt.
That is the whole design conversation. Everything else is detail.
General Ranges (And Why They're Ranges)
These are common industry practice ranges for compacted thickness, not a specification for your site. A site review, and on larger projects an engineered section, is what produces the actual number.

Two things about that table matter more than the numbers in it:
Lift structure. Thicker sections are placed in multiple lifts — a coarser base course and a finer surface course. This gives better compaction and a better-performing surface than one thick lift.
Compacted, not loose. Loose asphalt compacts down roughly a quarter of its placed depth. A bid that says "3 inches" without saying compacted is a bid worth clarifying in writing.
Where Thickness Should Vary Within One Lot
Uniform thickness across an entire commercial property is usually the wrong design. It over-builds the parking stalls and under-builds the places that fail:
- Entrance aprons — every vehicle entering the site crosses them, often while turning.
- Drive aisles and truck routes — the real load paths.
- Dumpster pads and approach — a front-load truck sets outriggers and lifts several tons on a small footprint. This is the number one premature-failure location on commercial lots, and it is the most common place a concrete pad pays for itself.
- Loading docks and service areas — heavy, slow, turning traffic.
- Fire lanes and apparatus turnarounds — designed for a vehicle that may show up twice a decade and must not break the pavement when it does.
A thoughtful section spends the money where the trucks are and saves it where the cars park.
Base and Drainage: The Part That Actually Decides Service Life
If you have budget for one more inch, the honest advice is usually to put it in the base — and if you have budget for drainage, put it there first.
Base has to be the right gradation, placed in lifts, and compacted to a density target. "We put down some gravel" is not base. And no thickness of asphalt compensates for water sitting in the section: saturated base loses strength, freeze-thaw works the void, and the surface fails from the bottom up. In a freeze-thaw climate this is not a marginal effect. It is the primary determinant of whether a section lasts.
Overlay Thickness Is a Different Question
Overlays follow different logic than new construction. Thickness there is driven by the condition of the existing surface, the amount of milling, elevation constraints at curbs, doors, gutter pans and thresholds, and what transitions can be built at the tie-ins.
The bigger question with an overlay is never the thickness — it is whether the base is sound enough to justify one at all. If it is not, the overlay reflects the underlying cracking through and fails on the base's timeline.
How to Ask Your Contractor
Four questions that produce a useful answer:
1. "What compacted asphalt thickness and base depth are you proposing, and in how many lifts?"
2. "What are you assuming about my subgrade, and what happens if it is worse than assumed?"
3. "Is the section varied for the truck routes and the dumpster pad?"
4. "What density target are you compacting to, and how is it verified?"
A contractor who answers those four clearly is designing your pavement. One who answers with a single inch count is quoting a commodity.

Residential driveways commonly run 2–3 inches of compacted asphalt over 4–8 inches of compacted aggregate base, adjusted for soil conditions, drainage and whether heavy vehicles will use it. Soft or poorly draining soils need more base, not just more asphalt.

Those routes are designed against the heavy repeating axle, not the average vehicle. Refuse trucks, semi-trailers and fire apparatus concentrate load at slow speeds and while turning, so trash routes, loading approaches and dumpster pads are commonly built with a heavier section, a deeper base, or concrete at the pad itself.
Should the whole parking lot be the same thickness?
Almost never. A uniform section either overbuilds the stalls or underbuilds the drive lanes. Sectioning the lot into stalls, drive aisles, truck routes and pads usually delivers longer service life for the same or less total cost.
How does Montana subgrade affect asphalt thickness?
Subgrade strength sets the whole design. Free-draining gravelly soils support a thinner section, while silt and clay soils that hold moisture through the freeze-thaw season need more base or stabilization. Two lots in the same town can require different sections based on what is under them.
How many lifts should the asphalt be placed in?
Thicker sections are placed in multiple lifts because compaction has to reach through the mat. A binder or base lift under a finer surface lift also lets each layer do its job, and the joint locations between lifts should be offset rather than stacked.
Can I add thickness later instead of paying for it now?
An overlay adds structure only when the existing section and base are still sound. If the base is the limiting factor, the added inches sit on the same weakness and reflect the same cracking through, which is why base condition is confirmed before an overlay is offered as an option.
Is asphalt or concrete better for a dumpster pad?
Concrete is the usual answer at the pad. Static loads, hydraulic lift forces, turning steel wheels and dripped fluids attack asphalt at exactly that spot, so many owners pave the lot in asphalt and place a concrete pad and approach where the truck sets its wheels.
Does a driveway in Whitefish or Bigfork need a heavier section than a valley-floor lot?
Frequently, yes — not because of elevation itself, but because of what comes with it: longer frost duration, shaded areas that hold moisture, steeper grades that concentrate runoff, and RV or equipment parking. Those conditions push the design toward more base depth and better drainage rather than a thicker mat alone.
How do I verify the thickness I paid for was actually placed?
Two ways: reconcile delivered tonnage against area and specified compacted depth using the weigh tickets, and take cores if the project or the disagreement warrants it. Requiring the weigh tickets at closeout is free, and it is the reason the number in the proposal has to be stated as compacted thickness.
