    Salt brine and rock salt aren't competitors — they're tools for different jobs. Brine wins on timing (anti-icing before a storm). Rock salt wins on bulk melt (after accumulation, above 15°F).     Why anti-icing beats de-icing every time

    Anti-icing means applying salt brine before snow falls, so accumulation never bonds to the pavement. De-icing means breaking the bond after the fact, which takes 4–8x more material. A typical brine pre-treat uses 30–40 gallons of liquid per lane-mile (~$10–$15 of material). The equivalent post-storm rock-salt rescue can run 500+ lbs per lane-mile.

    What changed for the 2026–27 winter

    A simple weekly cadence for property managers

    - Sunday night: review the 7-day forecast. Mark any storm with >2" accumulation potential.

    - 24 hrs before any storm: apply anti-ice brine to drive lanes, entrances, and ADA paths.

    - Storm day: plow at 1" accumulation, salt only where bonded ice forms.

    - Post-storm: photograph the lot, log application volumes, file the COI/timestamp packet.

    At what temperature does rock salt stop working?

    Sodium-chloride rock salt loses most of its melting capacity below 15°F and is essentially ineffective below 10°F. In that range, the right move is mechanical removal via commercial snow and ice services, abrasives for traction, and a brine-pre-wetted treated salt if chemical action is still needed.

    Is salt brine safer for pavement and concrete than rock salt?

    Yes, on two counts. Brine puts down 25–35% less total chloride per event than a salt-only program, and it's applied as a controlled liquid rather than a broadcast solid, so less of it ends up on adjacent concrete, landscaping, and storm inlets.     When should I anti-ice with brine before a storm?

    Can I use brine and rock salt together?

    Yes — that combination (called pre-wetting or treated salt) is the standard for storms below 20°F. The brine activates the salt on contact and reduces bounce-and-scatter loss, which is why treated salt out-performs dry rock salt by roughly 30% on the same application rate.
